Free Tibetan Dictionary on App Store

The free application Tibetan Dictionary is available for free at the Apple App Store:

It contains the following dictionaries:

  • Tibetan-Tibetan dictionary
  • Rangjung Yeshe Tibetan-English dictionary
  • English - Tibetan dictionary

The dictionary application is very well made and supports the iPhone Tibetan keyboard.

2. Rangjung Yeshe Tibetan dictionary for iPhone and iPod touch

Note: The following dictionaries are based on the Rangjung Yeshe Tibetan dictionary created by Erik Pema Kunsang, the Rangjung Yeshe Shedra and the people at DharmaDictionary.net. They are published with the kind permission of Erik Pema Kunsang.

iPhone and iPod touch

There are two different versions available:

  1. a Unicode Tibetan dictionary, requiring OS-X version 4.2 and a Tibetan keyboard,
  2. a Wylie version, that works with Roman script and runs on all OS-X versions.

Both dictionaries can be installed at the same time.

1. iPhone and iPod touch Tibetan Unicode dictionary

Preparation

Note: You need to make sure that your iPhone or iPod touch runs at least OS-X 4.2.1.

Installation

Get a dictionary app that supports stardict

There are a number of iPhone and iPod touch apps that support the stardict dictionary format, for example:

Note: for both Dictionary Universal (since v. 4.0) and GuruDict also work correctly with iPad, for additional iPad software see:

Setup

Note: this setup describes Dictionary Universal and Guru Dict

  1. Make sure that your firmware is at least iOS 4.2.1 and you have installed a Tibetan keyboard.

2.  Install the dictionary app on your iPhone or iPod touch, and then use iTunes to install the Tibetan dictionary on your iPhone or iPod touch:
3.  Download the Tibetan Unicode dictionary for Stardict here.
3. Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to iTunes. Select your device (click on the device on the left border of iTunes).
4. In iTunes, select the "Apps"-screen by clicking on "Apps" on the top line. (It says: "Summary Info Apps ....", click on Apps)
5. Then scroll down this page until you see the "File sharing" section.
6. Select the dictionary app
7. Drag & drop the RY-dictionary-file you have downloaded into the Files-section, it will synchronize to onto your device.
8. Sync iTunes and disconnect your device
9. On your device, start the dictionary application
10. Dictionary Universal: Go to settings (minimize the keyboard if it's in the way), select Dictionaries, and press "install". Click on the file you have uploaded to start the installation.
Guru Dict: Goto Settings / Dictionary install / Browse Dictionaries / select your newly installed dictionary. Then, on the main screen, make sure that all dictionaries are selected (ticked).
11. You can now use the dictionary.

2.   Install GuruDict from app store
3.  Select Settings / Dictionary install... and directly enter http://digitaltibetan.org/Media/Resources/RangjungYesheTibetanDictionaryStardict.tar.bz2 as URL (use correct upper/lower case letters) for the dictionary. It then gets downloaded directly into the application.
4.  Enable the dictionary in Dictionaries.

2. iPhone and iPod touch Tibetan Wylie dictionary (Dictionary Universal)

If you do not want to install a Tibetan keyboard, you can use the following Wylie dictionary. It is also possible to install both dictionaries and search for Wylie or Unicode Tibetan expression.

  2. Download the Wylie ZIP version of the dictionary: RangjungYesheTibetanWylie.zip
  3. Connect your iPhone or iPod touch to iTunes. Select your device (click on the device on the left border of iTunes).
  4. In iTunes, select the "Apps"-screen by clicking on "Apps" on the top line. (It says: "Summary Info Apps ....", click on Apps)
