Other mobile devices

iPad

There are two different versions available:

  1. a Unicode Tibetan dictionary, requiring OS-X version 4.2 and a Tibetan keyboard,
  2. a Wylie version, that works with Roman script and runs on all OS-X versions.

Both dictionaries can be installed at the same time.

1. iPad Tibetan Unicode dictionary

Preparation

Note: You need to make sure that your iPad touch runs at least OS-X 4.2.1.

Installation

Get a dictionary app for iPad that supports stardict

There are a number of iPad apps that support the stardict dictionary format, for example:

Note: the application "Dictionary Universal" for iPod touch and iPhone also works on the iPad and support the full resolution of the iPad screen since version 4.0. See: Tibetan Dictionary for iPhone and iPod touch

Setup

Voice Dict Pro
  1. Make sure that your firmware is at least iOS 4.2.1 and you have installed a Tibetan keyboard.
  2. Install one of the dictionary apps on your iPad, e.g. Voice Dict Pro for iPad on your iPad.
  3. Download the three uncompressed RangjungYeshe dictionary files: RangjungYeshe2003.dict, RangjungYeshe2003Uni.idx, RangjungYeshe2003Uni.ifo
See Tibetan Dictionary for iPhone and iPod touch for installation notes for GuruDict and Dictionary Universal
Note: If you have trouble downloading those three rather large files, you can instead download the following ZIP archive: RangjungYeshe2003Uni.zip. Unzip the content and proceed with the three files contained in the archive.
  1. Use a wireless network and the FTP server that is built into the dictionary app to install the three files on your iPad. You will need an FTP client on your computer to transfer the dictionary files to your iPad using the FTP-function that is built into the Voice Dict Pro for iPad app.
Note: Some FTP clients try to detect the file-format and then wrongly transfer files in text formats which alters their content. Make sure that your FTP client uses binary (BIN) transfer mode, otherwise Voice Dict Pro for iPad might not recognize the dictionary files.
Guru Dict
2.   Install Guru Dict from app store
3.  Select Settings / Dictionary install... and directly enter http://digitaltibetan.org/Media/Resources/RangjungYesheTibetanDictionaryStardict.tar.bz2 as URL (use correct upper/lower case letters) for the dictionary. It then gets downloaded directly into the application.
4.  Enable the dictionary in Dictionaries.

2. iPad Tibetan Wylie dictionary
