This section contains Tibetan script. Without proper Tibetan rendering support configured, you may see other symbols instead of Tibetan script. |
- Note: The dictionary on this page is based on the Rangjung Yeshe Tibetan dictionary created by Erik Pema Kunsang, the Rangjung Yeshe Shedra and the people at dharmadictionary.net. They are published with the kind permission of Erik Pema Kunsang.
Note: in order to help improving future versions of the dictionary:
- if you cannot find an entry in those dictionaries above, please create an (empty) entry on http://dharmadictionary.net. This way a definition can be added later.
- If you know the definition yourself, of course you can directly add it to http://dharmadictionary.net.
Features:
- The dictionary tool allows to search for Wylie or Tibetan Unicode expressions and translates them using the Rangjung Yeshe Tibetan glossary.
- It supports Tibetan -> English and English -> Tibetan search
- It supports phonetic search of Tibetan expressions
- The program monitors the clipboard for Tibetan Unicode or Wylie expressions and automatically translates them.
Searching Tibetan expressions
- To translate a Tibetan expression, you can:
- enter the Wylie equivalent into the Wylie-Input box (see Image 1). For example if you enter sems, the translation for སེམས་ is displayed. Tibetan explanation within the result are hot-linked and can be clicked.
- enter Tibetan Unicode (using a Tibetan Input Method) into the Unicode Input box.
- Copy either Wylie or Tibetan Unicode into the clipboard when working with other applications. TibetDict automatically recognizes Tibetan and offers a translation.
English to Tibetan
- To translate from English to Tibetan, you need to click on the "Full Text" tab below the Wylie input field. (See image 2)
- You can enter an expression of one or more English words. The first word is the most significant for the search.
Phonetic search
- For phonetic search (search by the sound of a word), you need to click on the "Phonetic" tab below the Wylie input field. (See image 3)
- Simply enter the phonetic representation of a Tibetan expression. The various possible Tibetan representations are while you type. The following rules apply:
- Umlauts are represented as:
- Umlaut ä as in Tibetan las, ལས་, French lait can be written as ae, ä or e. Entering le, lae or lä would find the Tibetan representation.
- Umlaut ö as in Tibetan bod, བོད་, French veux, can be written as ö or oe. Entering boe or bö would find the Tibetan representation.
- Umlaut ü as in Tibetan lus, ལུས་, can be written as ü or ue. Entering lue or lü would find the Tibetan representation.
- There is no difference between aspirated and non aspirated consonants.

Installation
Requirements
- TibetDict requires Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- For Installation on Windows XP the following additional preparations are necessary:
- Follow Preparing a Computer running Windows XP for Tibetan Editing
- Microsoft .NET framework needs to be installed.
- Make sure that Tibetan Fonts (Unicode) are installed.

- Unpack the ZIP file and start setup.exe (the program is not digitally signed, so you will receive a security warning)
