Overview

Currently the best mobile devices for working Tibetan are iPhone, iPod touch and iPad, since with operating system update OS-X 4.2.1 Tibetan is fully supported: the iPhone can display Tibetan Unicode correctly and supports a Tibetan input method. For installation, follow:

Additionally there is support for Android phones. However those devices are unable to correctly render Tibetan script[1] (Wylie transliteration only) and the applications required are not free.

Installation

Get a dictionary app for the N900 that supports stardict

Easier to use is MStardict:

Setup

  1. Install MStardict on your N900 using the N900 application installer.
  2. Download the three uncompressed RangjungYeshe dictionary files: RangjungYesheTibetanWylie.dict.dz, RangjungYesheTibetanWylie.idx, RangjungYesheTibetanWylie.ifo
  3. Connect your N900 via USB. Install the three files within a mstardict folder within the N900 internal memory. Simply create this folder in the top-level of the USB-drive of your internal N900 memory if it doesn't exist.

Installation

Get a dictionary app for Android that supports stardict

A free Android dictionary application that works and does not display annoying ads is WordMate.

Setup

  1. Install WordMate using the Android store.
  2. Download the three completely uncompressed RangjungYeshe dictionary files: RangjungYesheTibetanWylie.dict, RangjungYesheTibetanWylie.idx, RangjungYesheTibetanWylie.ifo
  3. Connect your Android phone via USB as USB memory stick. Install the three files within a wordmade folder that has already been created by the application.
