Preparation

1. Follow Preparing Computers for Tibetan Editing to setup your computer for Tibetan editing. (Install input method, fonts and correct display of complex scripts)
2. Get the latest version of OpenOffice for your platform

Note: For Windows computers, the recommended versions are either 3.0.1 or 3.2 or newer. It seems that 3.1 and 3.1.1 have problems with some Sanskrit stacks on Windows platforms. For Mac and Linux all versions from 3.0.1 onwards work fine.

The recommended OpenOffice version is 3.2 or newer. Download here.

Configuration of OpenOffice

1. Start OpenOffice
2. Select Tools/Options/Language Settings/Languages and within "Enhanced Language Support" enable "Enabled complex text layout (CTL)". Complex text layout is required to be able to work with Tibetan Unicode fonts in OpenOffice.
3. In the same dialog select as "Default Language" for "CTL" Dzongkha. Dzongkha (a language spoken in Bhutan that is related to Tibetan and uses the same script as Tibetan).
4. Select OK. From now each font select dialog requires the definition of two fonts: one font that is been used for western texts (e.g. English) and one font that is been used for Tibetan.
5. Select Tools/Options/OpenOffice Writer/Basic Fonts (CTL).
6. Configure Jomolhari as your default Tibetan font. (Make sure that you actually have installed Jomolhari, it can be downloaded freely from Chris Fynn's website, see Jomolhari)

First tests

If you have correctly followed Preparing Computers for Tibetan Editing, you should now be able enter English or Tibetan within OpenOffice by simply switching the input method of your Operating system.

• In Windows, the TISE input method switches between English and Wylie-Tibetan when Shift-<space> is pressed.
• In Linux use the Gnome-UIM applet, enable bo-wylie as input method.
• With Mac OS-X select the Tibetan Wylie keyboard.
